Technical Info

LISTED ON THIS page are some technical details about FIREDUCT.

FIREDUCT is a Fenland Fire Product System. FIREDUCT are the sole Irish agents for Fenland.

FIREDUCT is built such that it will achieve fire ratings required by Building Control and Local By-law Legislation to the methods of test and standards defined in:
  • BS 476 Part 24 - ISO 6944
As such, our product complies with international standards.

FireDuct

In order for FIREDUCT to meet this standard, our product had to meet the criteria regarding the provisions for limiting fire spread contained in it.

The standard specifically deals with "the design and construction of ductwork systems to prevent their becoming the means by which fire, smoke and other products of combustion can spread from one compartment to another, or prejudice the safe use of escape routes".

FIREDUCT successfully met these standards, which related to:
  • Stability - resistance to collapse
  • Integrity - resistance to fire penetration
  • Insulation - resistance to the transfer of excessive heat
The specific criteria (occuring during the actual test) related to the above three points are:
  1. Stability

Stability failure is deemed to occur when duct types being tested collapse in such a manner that the duct no longer fulfils its intended function. Included in this is the ability of a smoke extract duct to retain at least 75% of its cross sectional area along its whole length, both inside and outside the furnace used during testing.

  2. Integrity

Integrity of Ductwork must exist in order to pass the standard. The presence and the formation of cracks, holes or other openings outside the furnace through which flames or hot gases can pass constitutes integrity failure.

  3. Insulation

Proper insulation must also exist in the ductwork. Ductwork will not meet the standard when the temperature rises above initial ambient temperature on the unexposed surface of the test specimen outside the furnace exceeds at the following levels:

    1. 140 degrees centigrade as an average value

      OR

    2. 180 degrees centigrade as a maximum value

FIREDUCT has successfully met all these standards and is certified by the Loss Prevention Council to BS476 (Part 24) and ISO 6944.
